Collecting books has recently become a passion for a whole new generation of bibliophiles. Modern first editions have brought in serious money at book auctions up and down the country. J. K. Rowling's Harry Potter books have, for example, changed hands for huge sums, and in recent years, as well as the Enid Blytons, the Malcolm Savilles, Brent-Dyers et al, other books have suddenly gained collectable status.
The Observers' Series for instance. Not so very long ago these little pocket editions could be picked up for coppers and supplies seemed plentiful, however, things have changed. Jacketed copies can now be found in second hand bookshops for anything between £3 to £10 or £12 for fairly ordinary titles. The really scarce editions, ironically those published towards the end of the series run in the early 1980s now command £100 or more depending on condition and the presence of a dust jacket where applicable. The rarest title of all, The World Atlas, can sell for as much as £150 in mint condition. However, as with all things collectable, rare items can still turn up for 50 pence at flea markets and car boot sales and the like. Good hunting!
